What is Myofascial Release?
Fascia is a tough connective tissue that spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to foot, functioning without interruption. Fascia has the power to profoundly affect every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, organ and cell body. It is constantly changing to accomodate for the body's demands, and it separates, supports, connects and protects everything within the body. Its connection to the body's entirety automatically makes it capable to not only influence, but also be influenced by every structure, system and organ. When fascia is injured by trauma such as a motor vehicle accident, infection or any other demands we put our body through on a daily basis, the fascia will harden and thicken at the site of the injury. Due to fascia's vast coverage and continuous layer within the body, the site of the injury may effect other areas of the body which seem unrelated to the affected tissue. The John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release Approach consists of gentle application of sustained pressure into the fascial restrictions.
